Mark
Winston is that rare individual, a scientist who can speak eloquently
to the public. Recognized as the world's leading expert on bees and pollination,
he also has had a distinguished career writing and commenting on environmental
issues and science policy. His recent award-winning book Nature Wars: People vs.
Pests (Harvard University Press) has been the most probing and thoughtful
discussion of pesticide use since Silent Spring. Winston's regular editorial
columns for the Vancouver Sun have discussed topics as diverse as genetically
modified plants and endangered species, with his unique blend of wry humor and
insightful commentary. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The
Sciences, Orion magazine, and frequently on CBC radio and television and
National Public Radio. Winston's research and communication achievements have
been recognized by many awards, including the Manning Award for Innovation, the
Sterling Prize in Support of Controversy, the British Columbia Gold Medal in
Science and Engineering, and most recently a prestigious Killam Fellowship from
the Canada Council.
