Bernt (Bernie) Solymar received his B.Sc. at Brock University in 1983, B.Sc. Honours in Agriculture at the University of Guelph in 1985 and his M.Sc. in Biology from Brock University in 1988.

For the past 13 years Bernie has been an IPM Specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. He has experience with a wide variety of crops including apple, pear, strawberry, sweet corn, tomato and muck crops. He has written numerous publications including Integrated Pest Management for Ontario Apple Orchards and Introduction to High Density Apple Orchard Management, and been responsible for developing and implementing advanced IPM techniques in a number of commodities.

Bernie has traveled widely (Germany, Holland, Italy, New Zealand, United States). His expertise in high-density production systems earned him the conference coordinator job with the International Dwarf Fruit Tree association in 1999. He has also been involved in a CIDA development in Chile where he helped identify the need for a government extension service and provided training for agricultural consultants.

 In June 2001, Bernie started EarthTramper Consulting, an agricultural and ecological consulting company specializing in IPM development and inspection services, eco-labelling, sustainable agriculture practices, and grasslands conservation.

Bernie lives on a small farm in Pt. Ryerse with his wife Debbie, 3 children (Becky, Kirin and Michelle), and border collie, Moki.
