Dr. Larry L. Larson

Larry L. Larson has been a research entomologist for The Dow Chemical Co., Dow Elanco, and now Dow AgroSciences for 23 years, and is currently located at global headquarters in Indianapolis.  He received his BS in biology from San Diego State College and his Ph.D. in entomology from the University of California, Riverside.  He has held numerous positions within technical management in discovery, tech service and development, and product development.  Currently he is the Crops Advisor within discovery research responsible for the coordination of laboratory research on predevelopment, development, and commercial insect management tools for Dow AgroSciences.

Dr. Larson has been a member of ESA since 1972 and is motivated by a drive to give back to a profession that has been very rewarding for him.  He has been a member and chair of the Committee on Reference Standards, and the Ethics Committee, and for the last 3 years has served as the North Central Branch representative on the ESA Governing Board.  “I feel a genuine part of  the Governing Board Team and wish to continue to shape an exciting future for all the members of the ESA.”  In the North Central Branch he has served as chair of the Student Awards Committee, Resolutions Committee, Chair of the Council of Elders, and Nominating Committee, and was president of the North Central Branch in 1993-1994.   A Board Certified Entomologist in pesticide development, analysis, and toxicology, he has been active in ARPE and BCE, serving as North Central Branch representative and as the last full term president of ARPE during the transition to BCE.  For the past 3 years he has served as the governing board liaison to the BCE Board.  He currently represents the ESA on the CAST Board and is Chair of the Plant Protection Working Group, Chair of the Membership Committee, and a member of the Executive Committee.  Dr. Larson is also active in the CAST Conversations on Change program, representing the ESA in this strategic planning group of 36 agricultural scientific societies.

Dr. Larson is active in entomological education in local schools, and has organized booths at the branch and national level Insect Expos for the last 5 years with an “Insects Up Close and Personal” theme.  Since 1994, he has organized a “New Products from Industry” Symposium at the ESA National Meetings.  An expert on insecticide terminology, Dr. Larson has over 100 internal and external publications, is the author of ESA’s Commercial and Experimental Organic Insecticides and has been editor of the Materials Tested Section of the Arthropod Management Tests since its beginning in 1976.  He is a member of CAST, Sigma Xi, and Phi Kappa Phi.

Dr. Larson is an energetic proponent of the profession of entomology and the Entomological Society of America.  He has provided valuable service to the Society in many key positions and as a result has developed insight into the needs and directions of the society and its members.  Dr Larson is currently the President of the Entomological Society of America.
